MAY 24TH & 25TH, 2008

Winnipeg Free Press

Thursday, May 22nd edition

Doors Open Winnipeg 2008  will be presented by Heritage Winnipeg, in addition to numerous other organizations, volunteers and sponsors, that help help make the Doors Open event possible.

Doors Open provides a unique cultural and educational experience. For one weekend of the year, the public is invited to enter built heritage treasures, cultural institutions and other buildings of interest that would not normally be open to the public, completely free of charge. Doors Open is a collaborative effort between the business and heritage communities, creating dynamic new partnerships and promoting civic pride in the built environment and heritage resources.

In its four years, Doors Open has attracted over 140,000 site visits to Winnipeg's built heritage treasures and cultural institutions.  The opportunity to enter our architectural legacies proved to be a fantastically popular attraction to a curious public, and the response to the event has been overwhelmingly positive and encouraging.  Moreover, it introduces and informs about Winnipeg's architecture, history and diverse cultures -- completely free of charge.  The event features buildings primarily in the downtown and in surrounding neighbourhoods.

History of Doors Open:

Doors Open originated in France i
n the mid-1980s and became part of European Heritage Days in 1991.

Since then, the number of participating countries increased from 11 to almost 50, and the number of visitors reached the 20 million mark in 2000. Building on the European success, New York City, Sydney, Australia, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil recently launched their own Doors Open programs. The Doors Open phenomenon came to Canada when Toronto began an annual event in 2000, attracting 76,000 visits to over 90 buildings. Annual events are now held in Ottawa, Calgary, St. John’s, and Brandon; and the Ontario Heritage Foundation has helped 27 communities throughout the province establish their own events.

Government of Canada Announces Funding For The Heritage Winnipeg Virtual Library

WINNIPEG, November 21, 2003 – Regional Minister for Manitoba and Member of Parliament (Winnipeg North–St. Paul) Rey Pagtakhan, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $334,761 in funding for the Heritage Winnipeg Corporation, to help finance the Heritage Winnipeg Virtual Library/Interactive Guide.

"I am pleased to announce funding for this project, especially today on the 25th Anniversary of the Heritage Winnipeg Corporation. Heritage Winnipeg will work with several partners to tell online the important story of Winnipeg's place in the history of our country," said Minister Pagtakhan. "This project will share Winnipeg's pivotal role in Canada's development as a nation with students and all Canadians, as well as people around the world."

The Heritage Winnipeg Virtual Library/Interactive Guide will be a free, bilingual online archive of photographic images, video, architectural drawings, maps and documents from the Heritage Winnipeg Corporation, the Province of Manitoba Archives, the University of Manitoba Archives and the City of Winnipeg Archives that relate the history of Winnipeg's built heritage and its relation to Canadian history. The new Web site and its content will guide the user through historical content on the buildings, characters, and events that created one of Canada's most unique and culturally significant areas, and played a critical role in both the development of the West and the growth of the nation.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Partnerships Fund component of its Canadian Culture Online Program. The goal of the Partnerships Fund is to encourage the creation of partnership initiatives between not-for-profit organizations across Canada and partners from the private and public sectors in the digitization of cultural collections for presentation online in a manner that specifically targets youth. The Heritage Winnipeg Corporation formed a partnership with eight organizations and businesses to undertake this project.

For more information about the Canadian Culture Online Program, please visit http://www.canadianheritage.gc.ca

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
