Penrose Avenue
444 Logan Avenue (formerly 232 Bell Avenue)
In 1894, Penrose House was designed and built by James McDiarmid.
The Bell Avenue home originally stood on a limestone foundation.
It has an asymmetrical design with a door to on side, wall
projections on the front facing, bay windows and dormers on
the third floor. The main floor of the interior includes a
vestibule and a spindle staircase, and a rear extension, which
was originally a summer kitchen. All the bedrooms and bathrooms
are on the upper floors.
McDiarmid sold the house prior to 1904, and changed hands
again before being purchased in 1906 by James Penrose. There
have been fewer than ten owners of the house in total. The
house was converted to a duplex in 1950 but the interior and
exterior have remained in tact.
