Henry E. Sharpe House
56 Balmoral Street

Built by architect D.J. Ross in 1906, the 2 1/2 storey house is still a noticeable piece of the landscape in West Broadway. The large home is constructed of brick. It sits on a stone foundation and bears a cross gabled roof with wide eaves supported by wooden dentils and plain brackets. It probably originated from a catalogue or book of plans from the period, and cost approximately $ 6,500 to build. It was built for Henry E. Sharpe, who came to Winnipeg from Ontario as the western manager of the Imperial Oil Company. Over the years, various decorative elements from various architectural styles have been added by the homes various owners. Unlike many homes in the West Broadway area, this home has never been converted into a boarding house. This has resulted in the survival of many of the houses original interior features, including an ornamental staircase. The house is still classified as a single family dwelling, although it has been run as a housing Cooperative by the Common Ground Co-op Limited. The plumbing and the wiring are the most recent renovations to the house.
