368 Edmonton
This massive downtown home on Edmonton Street was built by
architect Johann Schwab in 1901 for a cost of $8,000. The
duplex was built for business partners Martin Hoover and Alfred
Town, owners of the Hoover and Towne clothing store on Main
Street. However the partnership ended and the home was sold
in 1908. Subsequently, it became the home of various working
class people with the development of suburban areas outside
the downtown.
The house is in the Queen Anne style and bears a steeply
pitched roof with front facing gables, and a central dormer.
A section of the front porch still remains, and except for
a few missing ornamental features, the exterior of the home
remains largely the same, despite the extensive renovations
to the interior over time.
