Boylston Apartments (Congress Apartments)
300 River Avenue
The Congress (Boylston) apartments were built in 1910 for
approximately $90, 000, by J. Moxam, a local contractor. The
U shaped building was designed by Herbert E. Matthews, a commercial
architect, in a simplified Edwardian Neo-Classical style.
The apartments sits atop a stone foundation and concrete
piles which were added in 1937. It bears brown brick facing
on the front, east, and west facades, and in the back has
a rubble stone foundation and cream coloured facade. The rear
of the building also has enclosed wooden balconies, and a
wooden staircase. The entrance way is elaborate, bearing brass
doors, a balustrade, and stone steps.
There were originally 27 suites. Several had two bedrooms,
dining rooms, and pantries. In 1978 two suites were added
to the basement.
As many other apartments of this period, the building originally
catered to a higher class of tenants, but over time saw an
influx of more blue collar workers.
