Ambassador Apartments
379 Hargrave Street
Providing an impressive sight of handsome design and clean
lines, is a large elegant building known as the Ambassador
Apartments. The building, originally called the Breadalbane
Apartments, was constructed in 1909. It was a project of the
partnership between J. M. McArthur and James Fisher. To construct
their apartment enterprise, McArthur and Fisher chose architect
John Woodman and contractors, MacQuarrie and McLeod. Working
on a wedge-shaped lot, Woodman designed the apartment building
to maximize the street views and the natural light. The block
was made of brick masonry walls and reinforced concrete floors.
Since the 1960's the Ambassador Apartments have experienced
a mixture of tenants reflecting changes to the residential
aspect of the north of Portage neighbourhood. The block is
generally as elegant as it was when it was first constructed
in 1909.
