Heritage Winnipeg's Board of Directors:

2007-2008

 

Penny McMillan, President

Penny recently retired from her long-time position at Destination Winnipeg, previously named Tourism Winnipeg.

Penny is an active participant in the community and serves on the Board of Rainbow Stage, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, Social Planning of Winnipeg and regularly contributes to a number of other organizations by participating on additional Boards and Committees on specific projects.

Penny is proud to live in the Exchange District, work in downtown Winnipeg and market Winnipeg to visitors.

Celine Kear/Past President

Celine Power Kear was born in Branch and is a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas School.  She was the first outport student to win both the Junior Jubilee Scholarship for highest marks in the provincial public exams in Grade X and the Governor General's Medal for a similar feat in Grade XI.

After graduation with a BA from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a double major in French and history, she received an MA in French studies from Laval University in Quebec, graduating cum laude.  She is fluently bilingual.

She has taught at three universities including Memorial and is presently a part-time lecturer at the University of Winnipeg.  Her area of interest is 19th century French literature and the role of women in the development of the novel.

She is very active in the history and heritage community of Winnipeg where she has lived for many years.  She served as president of the Manitoba Historical Society (1996-98) and is presently serving a two-year term (2004-06) as president of Heritage Winnipeg.

She is past president of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA CANADA). Celine has never lost her affection for Newfoundland and spends her summers with her husband Allen in a 150 year old house in a historical preservation area of St. John's.  She also maintains her membership in the Newfoundland Historical Society.

John Petryshyn/2nd Vice-President

John Petryshyn was born in Berlin, Germany and immigrated to Canada in June of 1948. He is married with two children. John has a B.A. from the University of Manitoba and is currently a lawyer with Glowacki & Libitka. He was a former member of the Immigration Appeal Board of Canada (1983-88) and Immigration Appeals officer (1989-92).

He is an active member of his community with a very lengthy list of organizational involvement. Some include member of the Law Society of Manitoba, past president Progress-Vera Credit Union of Winnipeg, former Director of Unity Canada, and past president of the Liberal Party of Manitoba (1979-82).

Vacant/Secretary

W. Roger August/Treasurer was a senior consultant for IN-KA Project Development from its inception in 1984 to his retirement in 2000. As a consultant, he was involved in concept definition, policy setting, strategic planning, market research and, analysis, communications design and implementation as well as feasibility studies.

Prior to creating IN-KA, he spent over thirty years with the federal government where he was involved with a wide variety of programs ranging from the development of the North to regional economic development. One of his major roles in government involved the federal approach to urban issues.

During these years, as Regional Director for the Atlantic Provinces, then Ontario, he was instrumental in the development of the Halifax waterfront and Harbourfront in Toronto.
At one point, Roger August was Chair of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce Civic Affairs Committee, where he led a proactive group in assessing, and commenting on, the development of downtown Winnipeg. He established active and productive sub-committees in the areas of Civic Finance, City of Winnipeg Organization and Management, Urban Transportation, andSustainable Development. He also led a committee that produced two major conferences, involving business and community leaders in the city, on the future of Winnipeg.

Nancy Klos

Nancy Klos holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts, Honours (Political Science and Administrative Studies) from the University of Winnipeg. Nancy has been a member of Heritage Winnipeg since 1989, becoming a board member in 1997.She also was instrumental in the publication of Winnipeg InSight, and kindly donated copies to HeritageWinnipeg's library. Her areas of interest include heritage photography and heritage preservation-related research in tourism and the motion picture industry.

Walt Schoenhausen

Walt has a long and genuine interest in historical buildings and heritage sites. Over the years he has made several around-the-world trips to witness first hand ongoing restoration projects.He has traveled extensively to personally view the restoration of sites of historical significance.
Associated with many organizations in the City of Winnipeg and in Canada, he is an active member of Heritage Winnipeg and a life member of the following: Manitoba Historical Society, Canadian Hostelling Association, Manitoba Genealogical Society, and the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon).

Walt is currently on the Board of Directors for the Friends of Austria, and is a member of Friends of the Met. He is an advocate for the Canadian Honors System, which includes the Order of Canada and the Canadian Heraldic Authority -- a long standing association with the office of the Governor General which dates back to the time of Georges P. Vanier, and is considered a friend of Rideau Hall. He consults on an ongoing basis with The Chief Herald of Canada and The Athabaska Herald, on various aspects of policy and planning regarding Grants of Arms. In 1994, The Rt. Hon. Ramon J.Hnatyshyn, Governor General of Canada, bestowed Walt with a personal Grant of Arms.

Walt is currently with the Department of Justice and enjoys to volunteer his time in the community. His interests lie in supporting Heritage Winnipeg in Public Service/ Informationand Advocacy.

David Dandeneau

David Dandeneau was a development officer at the College universitaire de Saint-Boniface with responsibility for fundraising. He has established an endowment fund, which has raised more than$5 million. His other responsibilities include promotion and marketing, recruitment, strategic partnerships and special events.

He has had a long and varied experience in community organizations.

He is presently involved with la Maison-GabrielleRoy Inc., Manitoba Film and Sound Corporation (co founder), the Business Development Corporation of Saint-Boniface, the Youville Centre, the Manitoba Metis Federation and is president of the Saint-Boniface Development Corporation.

Jim Kacki, Architect

Jim is principal partner of James Kacki Architect and Planner Inc., and a holder of a B.Ach, U. of M., where he also taught in the 1980s.

His professional experience has included work with E. J. Gaboury, and with other Manitoba firms. His projects have included heritage design and work for Arts Accommodation in the Historic Winnipeg Area, The East Yards and late The Forks Site Plan.

He currently is a volunteer member of the Forks Historic Advisory Committee, and had just completed supervising the restoration of the tworail cars at the Forks.

Honourary Advisory Panel -

David J. Harris

Long time Heritage Winnipeg board member and director, David Harris, was educated in Bristol,England where, he says, he passed a "misspent youth watching trains, ships and aircraft". This youthful hobby introduced David to a lifelong interest in heritage, particularly built heritage railway history.

David began his career in Great Britain in the aircraft industry. Following immigration to Canada in 1957, he became a staff member of the Agricultural Engineering Department at the University of Manitoba and later was employed as a senior draftsperson in an architectural firm. For the past 30 years, David has been an instructor in Building Science and MachineDesign at Red River Community College. In England, David served in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force in 501, Country of Gloucester Squadron and was a civilian engineering instructor for the 62 Group Air Cadets.

David is a past president of the Manitoba Antique Association, and past member of the Manitoba Historical Society's Council. He has helped Heritage Winnipeg for many years with their newsletters and Streetcar 356. He was a charter member and past president of Midwestern Rail Association, charter member of Canadian Construction Research Council; charter memberof the Manitoba Building Envelope Council; and Member of Rail Safety Committee of the Manitoba Safety Council.

Jeanne M. Perreault

Jeanne Perreault is a retired school teacher, with 35 years at St. John's Ravencourt School. Shehas served as school trustee for Seine River School Division, and is a long time board member of Heritage Winnipeg, where she has kindly helped in updating membership.
She has received many volunteer awards;Pregnancy Distress, 25 years of counseling, Order of the Sask. From M.M.F., for helping the cause for rights of Metis women, Order of the Gate Ft. Garry for nine years and Prix Manitoba Award in 1996 for Heritage - individual voluntary services to name a few. Jeanne has been president of Heritage St.Norbert for over twenty years; promoting heritage, cultural, and historical buildings, (i.e.,Trappist Monastery Ruins and the Hotellerie now the St. Norbert Arts and Cultural Centre).

Alan Finnbogason

Alan Finnbogason is a retired executive of T. Eaton& Co. He is married to Marguerite and has one son, Charles and a daughter, Eve. Hiscommunity activities include past president of the following; Air Cadet League of Manitoba, Better Business Bureau, Winnipeg Enterprises, and Tourist and Convention Bureau.

Alan was also director of the Winnipeg Convention Centre and Tourism Winnipeg. Alanhas also been a consultant to the development of the Forks and Johnson Terminal building and is an definite asset to our organization.

Bernie Wolfe

Bernie Wolfe was one of the founding members of Heritage Winnipeg's incorporation in 1978. He was President of Heritage Winnipeg for five years and also past Governor of Heritage Canada.  Bernie served a long career in the political field as a former Deputy Mayor, and city councillor.He was a founding member of the Metropolitan Council, a member of the Tourism Board for many years, as well as a part ofcountless other boards offering his expertise and time.

To commemorate his tireless efforts Bernie was awarded the Order of Canada - bestowing one of the country's highest honour. In addition he has also been awarded the Order of the Buffalo, andBernie Wolfe Community School was erected in Transcona, his area of residence.
